In an indirect fired heater, the burner is fired into a heat exchanger. The flame is contained entirely in a burn chamber, which warms the heat exchanger. Air passes over the exchanger to heat the surrounding area. A gas furnace with a chimney is a common example of an indirect fired heater. These heaters are ideal for indoor living and working.

The biggest advantage of indirect fired heaters is that there is no CO2 or any byproduct released into the air, as the air never comes into contact with the flame. This also means the same air can be recirculated and reused in the combustion process. As a result, indirect fired heaters are preferred in office spaces, schools, events, and more. They produce very low humidity, reducing the risk of humidity build-up inside. Due to no ventilation requirements, spaces can be tightly sealed but they do require an external exhaust duct to be routed outside (or a heat duct inside). There is also no mold concern.
